Shocking development: Summer reality shows

It’s finally happened: Networks have produced a handful of watchable summer reality series, shows that actually don’t make you want to gouge your eyes out with salad tongs. Then again, most of ’em still suck ass—here are five new shows on both sides for Summer ’05:

#1. Situation: Comedy (Bravo, Tuesdays; debuts July 26): Yes, this is the one The Only TV Column That Matters™ keeps whining about, Sean Hayes’ (Will & Grace) competition wherein over 10,000 sitcom scripts were submitted last year and ultimately narrowed down to two—my brilliant treatment for a workplace comedy called City Weekly did not make the cut. Meanwhile, someone from our sales department might end up on the next Apprentice. Not bitter. Anyway, Situation: Comedy’s two finalists will now navigate a Project Greenlight-like studio maze to have 15-minute presentations of their respective sitcoms produced; both will air, then the winner will be chosen online by viewers. Fun viewing, but not quite as good as the indie sock-puppet production of my rejected sitcom that should be online any day now …
